Long time member of Mexico Soccer and the Del Rio Academy Michael Hernandez, captured the bronze medal at this year's Los Angeles International Jiu-Jitsu Open. Hosted by the North American Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation, this event welcomed over 1800 competitors to the Cerritos College campus in one of the areas biggest tournaments. The conditioning he received on the soccer field, along with the competitive play and practice he receives week in and week out, contributed to a successful transition to the sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. We have witnessed many of our current and former players successfully transition into various other sports, such as American Football, Rugby, Volleyball, and Mixed Martial Arts. It is a proven fact that athletes who compete in 2 or more sports have a better chance of receiving an athletic scholarship. So to all the kids out there that love soccer and are considering trying other sports, go for it!
Read MoreWelcome back Manny Sosa!
CEP Youth Ambassador Manny Sosa dropped by our 'Music Matters' program and blessed the kids with a motivational speech and performance. I encourage all of our soccer players to watch this motivational short video as an example of what can be accomplished with hard work and determination. Manny was a former member of our soccer program and now serves as a Youth Ambassador volunteer with our non-profit. Manny has big dreams and he is accomplishing every one of them, but what has impressed us the most is his desire to give back and serve the youth of our community. We can all learn something about the true meaning of 'love thy neighbor' from this extraordinary young man.

Here is what happens when we come together as a #Community to help the less fortunate! Thank you to everyone who participated and donated to the 'Smile on a Child' humanitarian campaign. Under the leadership of Eric Chavez, we were able to take vasts amounts of toys and clothing to the children of the 'City of Refuge' orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico. Our online donations raised over $1000 and provided Tijuana Christian Mission (the organization that runs the orphanages) some much needed financial aid to help continue providing excellent care to the orphans of Mexico. I hope these images bring a smile to your face and make this holiday season that much more special. To view more photos from this event, please click on the picture above. From the bottom of our hearts we thank you for supporting this project. Take a bow, you earned it!

I regret to inform you that Pablo Gonzales, father of Mexico original members Paul and Patrick, has passed away. You may have heard of a big rig overturning on the 105fwy last Friday the 16th. Pablo was the driver of that truck and did not survive the crash. He was part of the original 2005 Mexico Soccer team and was the reason we relocated the team from Downey to Whittier. He was one of the most dedicated father's and husbands I ever new. We ask you all to come together as a soccer family and help make a contribution to his family. Please click on the photo above or use the link below to make a donation and show your love and support to this beautiful family. May you rest in Peace!

A real life hero!
When was the last time you met a real life hero? Well I was fortunate enough to meet one this week. Please take the time to read the short passage below. Anything is possible! Cuando fue la última vez que se encontró con un héroe? Tuve el honor de conocer a uno está semana. Por favor tomen el tiempo de leer el pasaje debajo. Todo es posible!
Thousands of soldiers die each year to defend their country. United States Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills was sure that he would become another statistic when, during his third tour of duty in Afghanistan, he was caught in an IED blast four days before his twenty-fifth birthday. Against the odds, he lived, but at a severe cost—Travis became one of only five soldiers from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to survive a quadruple amputation.
Suddenly forced to reconcile with the fact that he no longer had arms or legs, Travis was faced with a future drastically different from the one he had imagined for himself. He would never again be able to lead his squad, hold his wife’s hand, or pick up his infant daughter.
Travis struggled through the painful and anxious days of rehabilitation so that he could regain the strength to live his life to the fullest. With enormous willpower and endurance, the unconditional love of his family, and a generous amount of faith, Travis shocked everyone with his remarkable recovery. Even without limbs, he still swims, dances with his wife, rides mountain bikes, and drives his daughter to school.
Travis inspires thousands every day with his remarkable journey. He doesn’t want to be thought of as wounded. “I’m just a man with scars,” he says, “living life to the fullest and best I know how.”
The Golden Ticket!
Mexico vs. USA in the Concacaf Cup 2015 at the Rose Bowl was the place to be. We offered one lucky Academy member the opportunity to experience this memorable event. We had a raffle and player Jose pulled the Golden Ticket. Take a look at some of the action for that day.
